Considered by many as an erotic practice which was  stopped in the early 1960’s.  Linda Wrigglesworth in her extensive studies of foot binding says it was not necessarily a male dominated tradition, but one governed by women for over a hundred years. The bound foot was not broken but moulded into a folded shape with tight bandages. Those who achieved tiny feet would be favoured; gaining status by marrying into a wealthy family.
