Portrait of a Geisha hand painted on patterned silk ground with blind appliqué forming low relief in patterned and plain silk.

Given to me by Fumiko Ogita on my first visit to Japan in 1978.

I was attending the World Crafts Council Conference in Kyoto. Prior to leaving London I had checked the Embroiderers’ Guild membership list and found we had one Life Member in Japan. An ongoing friendship led to the first  British Embroidery Exhibitions  and publication of Twelve British Embroiderers,  Gakken Tokyo  1984
